Camp X-Ray to premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival!!!

2014, 111 minutes, color, U.S.A., U.S. Dramatic

A young woman joins the military to be part of something bigger than herself and her small-town roots. Instead, she ends up as a new guard at Guantanamo Bay, where her mission is far from black and white. Surrounded by hostile jihadists and aggressive squadmates, she strikes up an unusual friendship with one of the detainees. As two people on opposite sides of a war, they struggle to find their way through the ethical quagmire of Guantanamo Bay. In the process, they form an unlikely bond that changes them both. Intricately constructed, Camp X-Ray is a case study in the power of performance. At still a young age Kristen Stewart has long been much more than a movie star, and with this nuanced and internal performance, she continues to prove she has serious acting chops. Opposite her, Payman Maadi delivers a riveting performance as a man caught in limbo, reaching out for reason. Burrowing past the politics and into the humanity of the infamous detention camp, writer/director Peter Sattler provides a fresh perspective on the discourse of the war on terrorism and achieves one of the great virtues of film—creating empathy. - T.G.

'Camp X-Ray' is one of the nine film selected for Sundance USA initiative

1/30/2014 - San Francisco, CA — Sundance Kabuki Cinemas - sundancecinemas.com

Nine films from the festival's 2014 lineup have been selected, and will be screened to the public in nine venues (one film per venue, that is) across the country on January 30. That's just four days after the festival closes, so audiences will be getting them while they're hot. At each screening, the relevant filmmaker will be present for a post-film Q&A.

Festival director John Cooper says, “Year-round audiences and arthouse theaters are vital parts of the independent film community, and our Sundance Film Festival USA initiative allows us to extend the energy and excitement of the Festival to them.”

Many of the selections are on the starrier end of the Sundance spectrum. San Francisco audiences will be getting the Kristen Stewart vehicle "Camp X-Ray," in which she plays a Guantanamo Bay guard who bonds with one of her prisoners. Chicago, meanwhile, gets Joe Swanberg's "Happy Christmas," in which Anna Kendrick (fresh from Swanberg's "Drinking Buddies") plays a young woman who moves in with her brother's family after a breakup. Melanie Lynskey and Lena Dunham co-star.[..]

Lane Garrison talks Camp X-Ray and has nice words to say about Kristen

What can you tell us about your role in Camp X-Ray?
Peter Sattler wrote this phenomenal script about Guantanamo Bay. I finally get to put on the other shoes. On Prison Break, I played the convict. I’ve played the convict a lot and, unfortunately, life has imitated art. I’ve seen the inside of those walls and know them too well, so the interesting thing about this character for me was to get to put on the prison guard’s shoes and walk around the fence-line. I got to see what it was like to play a man who worked inside the prison but got to leave.

What was it like working with Kristen Stewart?
Working with Kristen was phenomenal. I have nothing but great things to say about her. She’s a total tomboy and she loves sports. We were playing basketball or throwing the football every day in the prison. We set up a driving range there. She’s a great golfer too, so we had an immediate connection with sports. She just loves acting. It doesn’t matter if it’s a small film or a big budget film. She loves acting, as do I. This story is going to be really, really powerful. I think it’s going to cause some controversy that might make people ask the question, “What should we do with Guantanamo?”

Joseph Julian Soria talks about Camp X-Ray

Lena: You have Camp X-Ray coming up with Kristen Stewart.

Joseph Julian Soria: That’s going to be interesting. It’s probably going to be controversial. To give you a bit of the storyline that I can give you without disclosing too much information: The storyline is about Kristen’s character Cole and her experience being stationed at Guantanamo Bay, which is where they hold detainees and what life is like there. It’s about the experience that these soldiers go through and she ends up befriending one of the detainees and finds out that they are not all as bad as they are made out to be. I play basically her best friend in the military. My character’s arc actually starts off kind of naïve and a bit of a good, but by the end of it he falls in line with the belief system of everybody else and you see that arc and how he changes in the film. It’s definitely a different roll. The story as a whole is a great story. I’m really looking forward to seeing how it comes out.

Fan encounter:

"I said I would do a Twitlonger to talk about my Camp x ray set visit. I arrived in L.A and myself and a friend checked into our motel and headed to the set. When we got there, there was already a couple fans there. I immediately recognized them, they were my friends from the premieres. So unexpected, but was so great to see them, soon a couple others arrived and their ended up being 6 of us total. We all talked amongst ourselves and enjoying fangirling together about the past events that brought us together. I was getting so anxious, we did not expect to see her that first day because we were not even sure they were filming there still, and so we were just checking things out over there. I was not prepared at all, we had nothing for her to sign. We ended up using a piece of the paper with the directions there. I had a family pic in my purse from my sister's Wedding Shower. LOL,but we were staying. Every minute that went by, I got more anxious. We saw cars leaving before her driving right by us. Still no Kristen, the other ladies said to be very quiet and not stand up,because K had just been driving by and waving at fans. So we stayed quiet and respectful. Finally we see this black car driving up and I could hardly recognize Kristen, then she looked at us, I waved at her and she waved back, it looked like she was just going to drive by and suddenly she stopped. I was like so nervous, my friend went first, then I went second, I handed her my family pic backwards hoping she would not turn it over, but she did, and goes what the??, LOL, I was like Kristen I did not have anything to sign. It was so funny but kind of embarrassing. So she signed it, after she got done with everyone. Someone asked about pics, she said she could not get out of the car, the paps were bothering her,we told her we were watching for them. I was going to go over and tell them off. She said I don't want them making money off me. That is when I said I flipped one off earlier when we first got there. She said Right on!! She chit chatted with us for a bit,and then left. Me and my friend were disappointed we did not have anything for her to sign, I had left my pic with her and I at B.D 2 in the hotel. So we went back a couple days later. We were only expecting to just get a autograph. Two other very nice young woman joined us for the evening. While we waited about, the entire cast drove by. We waved and one cast member started chatting with us. He said I have yet to get my pic with Kristen.LOL, he was joking with us about it. Again we were very quiet and security was watching us pretty closely. We just chatted amongst ourselves. It was getting late, and we heard them still filming. Finally, we see the black car,all of us just got completely still. She pulled up right in front of us again,my friend said Hey Kristen just wanted to ask if she was willing to do pics with us this night. (Of course we're going to ask)She said yes, so all of went back and got pics and autographs. We could tell both nights she was tired, but it was at the end of filming,so she was more willing. But did not want to stay to long that night. We respected her,and made it real quick. Their was another couple exits so she already knew she was going to spend a couple minutes with us. I gave her a hug and another fan gave her jewelry and we were on our way. Kristen is a super hard worker,we are all so proud of her and her and her willingness to spend time with fans."

David Gordon Green talks about Camp X-Ray

David Gordon Green (executive producer of CXR) talks about Camp X-Ray with comingsoon.net

CS: It's funny, people are pointing to "Prince Avalanche" as your return to indie, but you've continued to produce indie movies even while doing your studio comedies, so what's the latest thing you've been working on?
Gordon Green:
Actually, I was out on set yesterday. I'm producing a movie that stars Kristen Stewart called "Camp X-Ray" that a friend of mine, Pete Sattler is directing. It was great to go out to that set, the star of "A Separation" was in it (Peyman Moaadi ) and I'm a huge fan of his, so it was kind of cool to see them in action. It takes place in Guantanamo, so they're shooting at a prison, so it's kind of fun. You know, for me, it's always an exciting balance, films like "Compliance" or "Catechism Cataclysm," some of the strange, offbeat stuff that I feel like needs a voice or needs some financing or just needs to exist on this earth for my own selfish and self-indulgent enjoyment. So it's great to wear a producer hat for me and put forth the writhing waves of talent out there.

CS: One of my nurses is a big Kristen Stewart fan, so she is definitely excited for "Camp X-Ray."
Gordon Green:
Right on. Well, I think it's a great change of pace for her, and I'm excited to see it, too.

From CinemaBlend

You’re helping a lot of people make their movies these days. You’re producing like a ton of different…
I just went to visit a set in LA the other day for a movie that…

Which one?
It’s called Camp X-Ray. My good buddy from college, Pete Sattler, is on production on it right now. It stars Kristen Stewart, about Guantanamo detainees. It’s really awesome.

Holy crap.
Yeah, it looks great. He used to be my props guy. I went to college with him and it’s just really amazing just watching him work as a director as opposed to a props guy or graphic designer, all of the different jobs he’s had. I come from a community of really supportive people that are always looking. You know, there are so many movies that we all want to make, you have to bring more people into the making part, like you need a lot of people to make your movies. Like me and Craig Zobel wrote a horror movie and I was reading it the other day and we were talking and he was like, “Man, I don’t know.” I said, “If you don’t want to make this, maybe I’ll make it. If you don’t have time, what if I did that or what if we give that to so and so, our other buddy?” You know, it’s kind of fun to have people that you can say, we need to accomplish a lot as a collective, very casually, and so, the more people we have working, the more we get done, the greater legacy we leave behind.
